Be Thou My Vision (Irish Origin, made into verse by Elizabeth Hull)
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best thought, by day or by night Waking or
sleeping, Thy presence my light
Be thou my battle shield, sword for my fight; Be thou my dignity, thou my delight,
Thou my soul’s shelter, thou my high tower; Raise thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.
Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord Thou
my great Father, and I Thy true son Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one
Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise Thou mine inheritance, now and always Thou and
Thou only first in my heart High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art
High King of heaven, my victory won May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s sun Heart of
my own heart, whatever befall Still be my vision, O ruler of all (Repeat)

“We must ‘give our utmost for His highest.’ Our obedience is certainly flawed if focused only on
what the world approves. Our obligations is to seek the expansion of the knowledge of the glory
of God and His Kingdom and this would logically require us each to prayerfully seek God about
doing the hardest thing we are able to do in the most crucial task we can find,, First John 1:8
says, “The Son of God appeared for this purpose, that He might destroy the works of the Devil.”
To follow Jesus is to go to war. This side of the Millennium that’s what the Christian life is. In a
war what needs to be done comes first. And a true sense of accomplishment is not that you did
what you wanted to do, or what you thought you were best at, but what you felt convinced was
most crucial, most important.” Ralph Winter, Perspectives, “Three Mission Eras,” 278.
“…because our Commander in Chief is not absent, but with us, the impossible becomes not only
practical, but imperative.” Sameul Zwemer, Perspectives, “The Glory of the Impossible,” (329).

Zweemer also says that “Opposition is a stimulus to greater activity. Great victory has never
been possible without great sacrifice.” (330)

Zweemer goes on to quote Charles Spurgeon who used this text: “All power is given unto
me…Lo, I am with you always” to say “You have a factor here that is absolutely infinite, and
what does it matter as to what other factors may be. ‘I will do as much as I can,’ says one. Any
fool can do that. He that believes in Christ does what he cannot do, attempts the impossible and
performs it.” (Quoted from Spurgeon’s sermon “Our Omnipotent Leader” in The Evangelization
of the World (London, 1887).

Zweemer also quotes Bishop Phillip Brooks: “Do not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger
men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the
doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be a miracle.” 1
“Be willing to go out on a limb with Me. If that is where I am leading you, it is the safest place to
be.” 2
“Keep fit and don’t lose your nerve.” 3
