Then he tied the medal around Wilbur’s neck.24

Charlotte’s Web is a treasured story for many reasons but especially for its joyful victory. Wilbur lives on. He is fed and not the food. For us, Jesus won the ultimate victory and destroyed the works of the devil (see 1 John 3:8). How awesome it is that we have the ultimate victor on our side and His Spirit lives within us. As John wrote, “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4; emphasis mine).

One day all our enemies, including death, will be vanquished. God will make all that is bittersweet to be sweet even as He did for the Israelite prophets whose water was poisoned. Elijah cast a log into the bitter waters and made them drinkable. God has made a way to change our heartaches into heavens through the log of the cross. Hold your head high and cast your sighs behind you, for your Prince draws you with everlasting love and crowns your head with glory (see Ps. 103:4; 2 Tim. 4:8).

O sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm
have gotten him victory.
The Lord has made known his victory. (Ps. 98:1–2 RSV)

As I read this psalm, a stunned, comatose sparrow revived and made a triumphant flight from her box on the porch to the holly tree in my yard. She flies around the porch still to remind me of victory!

Prayer: Thank You for the victory in Christ.
