A LITURGY FOR ONE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Battling a Destructive Desire<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jesus, here I am again,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Desiring a thing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That were I to indulge in it<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Would wage war against my own heart,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the hearts of those I love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
O Christ, rather let my life be thine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Take my desires. Let them be subsumed<\/p>\n\n\n\n
in still greater desire for you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Until there remains no room<\/p>\n\n\n\n
for these lesser cravings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this moment I might choose<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to indulge a fleeting hunger,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or I might choose<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To love you more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Faced with this temptation,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I would rather choose you, Jesus\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n
but I am weak. So be my strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I am shadowed. Be my light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I am selfish. Unmake me now,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and refashion my desires<\/p>\n\n\n\n
according to the better designs of your love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Given the choice of shame or glory,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let me choose glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Given the choice of this moment or eternity,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let me choose in this moment what is eternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Given the choice of this easy pleasure,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or the harder road of the cross,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
give me grace to choose to follow you<\/p>\n\n\n\n
knowing that there is nowhere apart from you<\/p>\n\n\n\n
presence where I might find the peace I long for,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
no lasting satisfaction apart from your<\/p>\n\n\n\n
reclamation of my heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let me build, then, my King,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a beautiful thing by long obedience,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
by the steady progression of small choices<\/p>\n\n\n\n
that laid end to end will become like the stones<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of a pleasing path stretching to eternity and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
unto your welcoming arms and unto the sound<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of your voice pronouncing the judgment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
